Chatbot

One term from the glossary, defined on its own page: what it means to anyone who meets it, and how we use it.

In short

A chatbot is a software application that holds a conversation in text or speech, answering questions within the scope it was given. It is a real and useful category, and a well-built one answers common questions well and hands on what it cannot; what marks the boundary is that the conversation is the whole job.

In practice

What it means for a business.

An AI employee starts where that ends: it acts on the conversation, booking the work, updating the record, and following up afterwards.

Compare a chatbot with an AI employee line by line, or see every term defined once.
